As part of the strengthening and deepening of the bilateral relationship following the opening of the Embassy of Uruguay in Türkiye, from November 11 to 14, 2024, the Head of Mission, Ambassador Hugo Cayrús, accompanied by First Secretary Federico Carreño, carried out a working visit to the city of Izmir. On this occasion, meetings were held with the Mayor of the Izmir Municipality, Mr. Cemil Tugay, as well as with the Governor of Izmir, Mr. Süleyman Elban. Furthermore, considering the importance of the economic and commercial area in the Embassy’s work, a meeting was also held with the President of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Mahmut Özgener.
Izmir is a metropolitan city in Türkiye located at the western end of Anatolia and is the capital of Izmir Province. It is the country’s second most important port after Istanbul and the third most populous city in Türkiye, after Istanbul and Ankara. It is also the second most populous city on the Aegean Sea, after Athens.
The meetings held were an excellent opportunity to initiate, from the Embassy of Uruguay in Ankara, contacts with authorities and institutions in Izmir to promote trade and investment cooperation, as well as to provide support and assistance for future visits by business delegations.
