Return to Uruguay

Interested in returning to Uruguay.

Who can carry out this procedure?

Born in Uruguay, children of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 16.021), grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 19.362), who can avail themselves of Article 76 of Law 18.250 or Decree 139/014 to carry out their return process to the Republic.

Article 76 of Law 18,250 and Regulatory Decree 330/08

To return definitively and only once to Uruguay, taking with him/her belongings, tools for professional use and/or a motor vehicle that is in his/her name with a minimum of one year of antiquity in his/her possession.

You will be free of all exchange formalities and exempt from all kinds of customs duties, taxes or customs duties upon entering Uruguay, proving that you have resided abroad permanently and continuously for at least two years.

It is recommended to apply at least one week before your trip.

Requirements

  1. Original and copy of valid Uruguayan identity card and/or passport in good condition for those who are returning.
  2. Document/s proving your residence for at least two years in Türkiye.
  3. List of goods printed and signed by the interested party (handwritten lists are not accepted, nor the Packing List of the transport company). Said list of belongings must comply with the conditions exhibited in the Return Manual.
  4. Original and copy of the vehicle ownership card or purchase invoice, authenticated and apostilled before the competent local authority.
  5. List of tools or machines for professional use, printed and signed by the interested party (handwritten lists are not accepted, nor the Packing List of the transport company); this list is made separately from the list of household goods. If they are simple tools for domestic use, they must be included in the list of household goods.
  6. Original of labor certificate of profession, art or trade, or other documents that accredit it; in case it is not in Spanish, it must be duly translated.

Note:

  • Please note that if the vehicle has been pledged through a financial institution, it cannot be returned until it has been paid in full; the year of ownership is counted from the date of payment of the amount owed.
  • To return with a vehicle, in case of being married with “community property regime”, provide the identity document of the spouse and the marriage registration or marriage certificate duly apostilled (if it is a Uruguayan document, it does not require an apostille). In case of being married with “separation of property”, the corresponding public documentation must be presented, duly apostilled (if it is a Uruguayan document, it does not require an apostille).
  • The vehicle may not be sold or transferred for a period of two years after entering Uruguay and must be registered with the Departmental Government of the domicile in the Republic, within 30 days from the date of release and withdrawal from Customs.

Once you have carefully reviewed the above requirements, please send your appointment request to uruturquia@mrree.gub.uy, attaching the required documents.

After corroborating the information, you will receive a reply with the details of your appointment to appear at the Consular Section on the date and time indicated.

Cost: No cost.

Decree 139/014

Return as many times as necessary to Uruguay, taking with them professional tools and equipment (no motor vehicle may enter the country).

You will be free of all exchange formalities and exempt from any kind of customs duties, taxes or customs duties when entering Uruguay, proving that you have resided abroad permanently and continuously for at least one year.
